Care and Services
St Jude’s Anglican Home provides long term complex care in a quiet Vancouver Westside residential neighbourhood.

Long Term Care (LTC)
The most comprehensive type of live-in care, LTC encompasses a range of services, both medical and non-medical, designed to support individuals who need help managing their health issues and daily activities and can no longer live successfully in the community or assisted living.
General Population and Special Care
St. Jude’s offers 2 types of care — General Population and Special Care
General Population:
Individuals living in general pop will have a variety of care needs. Often, they have mobility issues and need assistance with daily activities. They may also have memory issues or dementia as part of their health concerns. However, they are stable regarding their dementia needs.
Special Care:
Special care residents live in LTC primarily because of a dementia diagnosis. These residents may be quite well physically but because of their dementia disease, they are no longer able to live on their own. Our Special Care unit is a locked space, and staff are trained in how to successful approach and support this population.
We have 26 General Population Beds (2 double rooms)
We have 29 Special Care Beds (3 double rooms)
Medical Services
St. Jude’s Anglican Home is supported by a team of 3 doctors and/or NPs who come to the house regularly to attend to their patients. Every new admission is assigned one of these medical practitioners. They are on-site frequently, and all have comprehensive experience working with older adults.
Through VCH, St. Jude’s residents also have access to a Mental Health Team, as well as Wound and Hospice care.
Acute care and emergency services are available from Mount St. Joseph’s, St. Paul’s, or Vancouver General Hospitals.
Nursing Care
As is the case for all publicly funded LTC homes in British Columbia, St. Jude’s Nurse staffing is based of a model of 3.00 hours of direct care per resident, per day.
The way that looks at St. Jude’s is:
These individuals are responsible for the day-to-day care needs of our population.
The leader of this team, the Director of Care, is responsible for managing all the care staff and overseeing the clinical care of all the residents at St. Jude’s Anglican Home.
MORE SERVICES
Care Plan and Conferences
A specific and individualized care plan is developed for each new resident considering all aspects of their care. Approximately 2 months after admission, and annually after that, residents and their families meet with the interdisciplinary team to review and discuss the resident’s care. From this conference, a plan of care will be further developed. The care plan is a living document, changed or added to anytime there is a change in the resident’s care needs.
Spiritual Care
As part of the holistic care provided at St. Jude’s, an Anglican Chaplain provides multi-faith spiritual care to residents and families. Services with Priests or Ministers from the community are held for special observances and are multi-denominational in spirit. All who wish to attend are welcomed.
Other spiritual programming includes small group worship for residents living with dementia, hymn-sing and one to one spiritual care for residents and their families.
Celebration of Life services are held regularly to honour and remember those residents who have passed away. Families, friends, and staff are encouraged to join these important events.
Recreation
Our therapeutic recreation team uses recreation and leisure activities to help St. Jude’s residents maintain and improve their physical, cognitive, emotional and social well-being.
Activity events are designed to be:
Goal orientated
Programming is offered 7 days a week.
The team also works closely with our Rehabilitation and Spiritual Care teams to support and enhance Resident quality of Life.
Nutritional Services
All meals and snacks are prepared onsite in our kitchen by trained cooks and dietary aides. A Registered Dietitian assesses the nutritional requirements of each resident making a dietary care plan. Special diets and nutritional supplements are provided as needed. The Director of Support Services and Dietician collaborate to develop 2 – four-week menus: Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. A choice of menu items is offered at every meal.
In addition to a main meal served at noon and a lighter supper at 5:00 pm, resident are offered breakfast from 8:00-10:00 am as part of our “slow wake-up” policy. This practice is designed to accommodate both our early and late risers. Nourishments and snacks are also available throughout the day.
Pharmacy Services
All medications dispensed at St. Jude’s are provided by a contracted pharmacy.
The cost of the most medications are billed and covered by the Ministry of Health Pharmacare program. Any medications not full covered by the government are billed directly to, and must be paid by, the resident and/or their representative.
A pharmacist assigned to St. Jude’s meets regularly with the physicians and other team members to review the medications and make changes as appropriate.
Physiotherapy / Occupational Therapy
The rehab assistant, under the direction of a physiotherapist and/or occupational therapist, assists residents with injury recovery, seating and mobility requirements, and specialized strengthening exercises.
Dental Care
A dental hygienist is available to clean and assess resident’s teeth. The hygienist can refer residents to dentists for minor dental work done at St. Jude’s.
Families arrange for and pay for these services.
